Any problems with Polaris winch?
#1
When I bought my 700EFI in '06, they had a deal where they came with a 2500 Polaris winch for free. Warn is supposed to make the Polaris winch but it says Polaris on it. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with theirs. I had to replace a solenoid on mine the fist couple of months and then a couple of months after that I had the same problem. This time we just replaced the whole winch. It was all under warranty so it didn't cost me anything but gas to take it to the shop. Now, 7 months later I am having the same issue with this winch. I don't really use the winch much but I do have a snow blade I use it to raise and lower and also use it around the yard a little.
When the cable is out and the free spool is not on, I can press the "in control and hear a click but nothing happens. If I press the button a few times, it will eventually kick in and start spooling the cable back in. It doesn't do it every time but it seems to be happening more often now.
I am going to call my dealer and see what they will do for me but I wanted to see if anyone else is having issues with the winch too.
Thanks,
Jason

I've got an '07 500 Sportsman with the same "free" winch that you talk about. I had mine a month before it got a little wet and started to act up (intermittent click but no action - then it quit all together).
I talked to my dealer and he gave me a Warn solenoid (looks identical to Polaris, but it says Warn on it). After I installed it, I haven't had any trouble.... but I haven't had the "opportunity" to get it wet yet over the winter.
BTW We are suppose to get 6-12" snow tonight. Happy Spring

same thing here, when I purchased the ATV the shop threw in the winch. I ended up with a 2500# warn. A couple months later, the winch would not pull anymore, just the click click.
I returned to the dealer with the contactor (located under the right front wheel) and found out that they had installed a polaris contactor on awarn wich installation(looks the same as the warn but definitly feels cheaper and unlike the warn model there is no manufacturer ID on it).
The dealer exchanged it for the proper Warn contactor and have had no problem since.

I've had my 1500 lb "Warn", not PO, for two years now. All winter it is covered with, and full of wet snow. Works perfectly every time. Must be some major differences in the real Warn and the PO Warn.

I called my dealer and he is sending me another contactor to try out. I guess when my warranty goes out on this winch, I will have to just buy another one. I never had any issues with the Warn that I had on my other 700.

I also get the same problem every once in a while. Better keep my eye on it. IS the winch part of the machines warantty? I think I tossed all my winch paper work out.</end quote></div>
If the winch was installed by the dealer it should be covered.
My Polaris winch worked until this winter when I was plowing. I would raise the blade and it wouldn't go down. Click, click, click. I hit up and it works and then down works. It sucks when the blade was all the way up and I had to hit up to make it work. It was the contactor. Polaris knows they were defective, but instead of recalling it they just tell the dealers it's bad. I took my quad in and they're like, yeah, you an upgade to the other one.
One headlight blew and melted the plastic and my gas gauge read full all the time too. This was all after it was hotwired and stolen, recovered by the police, and repaired last summer. Before that little criminal cut my wiring harness everything was fine. My Warn 2000 and 2500 winches worked good for several years. My quads are stored outside year-round because I don't have a garage so that was kind of a torture test.
I had a quick-detachable winch mount on my last quad, and kept the winch mounted on the back. I had a quick-release bumper on the front and I could take it off and switch the winch to work from either end in less than a minute. That was a sweet setup. Most of the time I'd rather winch back out of trouble, not deeper into it. I had the six-foot cable remote and they made an optional 12-footer. When I was winching I was standing off to the side in case the cable broke. And it had a bracket on the handlebar that was good for when was plowing.
