4.03 in town Farmington,Maine--looking at the prices near the first post to now it seems as though gas has gone up about .50 in a bit over a month and summer isn't officially here yet, kind of makes you think it might hit the 5.00 mark this year at the rate its climbing.

It was $4.07 here yesterday. If you walk or ride a bike you don't use any gas but I don't expect many people to do that. I know a guy who likes to take 300 mile bike rides for fun, but it sounds like torture to me. If everyone bought a 100 mpg scooter or a moped it would save a lot of gas, and maybe the price would come down because they aren't selling enough of it. Most people do their daily driving in the city not on the highway and mopeds are made for that. You could drive the car or truck only when you really need it. Just a thought.

Frank,
A scooter or a moped would be cool. Laws would need to change in a lot of states.
Only problem I can think of for a bike around here or for that matter even possibly a scooter or a moped at around 40 mph.
You might be considered Cougar bait.
Them kitties like a challenge when it comes to eating.

We have people who Jog up and down the canyon between here and town. Lots of warm outcroppings of rocks at around 20 feet or so above the highway.

If there were cougars where I ride, I'd be strapped. Packing at least a .45 and an extra mag. I know mopeds up to 50cc are legal in more states than not, but some places have a 25 mph speed limit on them. You can't ride them on freeways, because the federal law says nothing under 125cc. I could be wrong but I thought the basic law was similar everywhere. Most places require a helmet (at least if you're under 18), and some type of licensing but not a motorcycle license. Everything in California has to be CARB compliant because of smog.

Each state has their own laws but I did a quick search and found 30 states where mopeds are legal.

Our family has felt the pinch. My wife is going back to work this year and a 1/3 of
her salary is going to day care. But even so it will help out with the auto gas, Gas&Electric
(power co, more than doubled in our state) along with other inflation. Things are just getting
too expensive. When finances improve (LOL, right) I may look into a used rice burner just
for communte purposes and park the truck. I don't know maybe the extra Car Insurance
cost will kill the idea. Need to investigate. Somethings gotta give though!

Good thread Stendori!

Just an added comment or two, or maybe more here... This week, Republicans tried to open up offshore drilling (85% of our shoreline is off limits to our drilling) and allow drilling in ANWR. This bill was rejected along party lines. Republicans voted for it, Democrats voted against it. (Not all, but majorities in both parties). Democrats did try to get a bill through to tax the oil companies. Fortunately it failed. If we raise taxes on the oil companies we are going to end up paying for it in the long run. The Democrats talk about alternative energy sources, but my two US Senators (Kennedy and Kerry) don't want a windfarm built off the coast of Massachusetts. Democrats say they are pro-union. Yet, they vote against drilling for oil in ANWR where the unions need the work. I'm all for alternative energy. But, in the meantime lets get the oil out of the ground. We have natural RESOURCES. We should use them. We have to be the most idiotic people on Earth if we are not using the God given resources we have here. Opec must laugh their heads off when they see us not drilling. China and other nations are starting to drill just outside of our territorial waters off our coasts and in the Gulf of Mexico, but we aren't!!! How braindead are we??? Just venting... We need better people running the show...
