Calling all Scrambler GURU's
Hi all, been a while. I have a couple of Scrammy's and both are giving me grief. I'll start with the Newer one as it is I believe a simpler fix. It's a 98 500 4 Stroke. I recently put 4 Mud Lite XL's on it, having to purchase new rims to accomidate the larger tires. The machine just ate a newer belt, and got the clutches so hot that the plastic belt guard melted. I believe it is to do with the larger tires and wonder if there is a way to lower the gear ratio in the transmission? The thing never goes faster than 30-35 mph so I don't need the top speed. Any Ideas????
Next, the problem child. A 95 400 2-smoke. The engine had a massive failure, with the counterbalance seizing, and other problems. I rebuilt it and spared no expense. New wiseco piston and rings, hot rods rod, etc. I put it all together and it ran awesome. Pull wheelies up and down the drive all day long. Took it out for a couple of short rides and performed well. Then on a long ride, it gave grief. I was crossing some water when the engine decided that it no longer wanted to rev. It just sits and sputters, as if it has no compression. It seems to be heat related as if I let it cool, or ride it about 40 mph it has decent power. I wired the cooling fan up to run when the key was on but this did not help. I am at my wit's end and wonder if anyone has heard of this before? Any ideas on this either? |

just a guess but i agree that putting these xl's w/ the heavier tires and going slow is an issue w/ out low range to help keep the clutch turning faster to keep it cooler for sure. i myself dont have one but guessing you could do some sprocket switching to change the gearing to give better pull on the bottom but will take away from top and keep the revs higher.
a friend used to have the same idear about going thru water on his 400 but i dont know what he did to fix it. i think it had something to do w/ the counter balancer but thats just a guess. ftwflt might know more if he checks in later in the day. |

The 400 sounds like you smoked the rings or maybe didnt break them in enough |

The 400 has good compression though, I didn't have a gauge but I used my thumb. The 500, a lighter setting is all it takes? I think it might require a little more than that. Is there a way to reduce the gear ratio in the gear box? Maybe I should buy an Explorer case, as it has low range.....

Try the setting changes.You can even go with heavier weights.These CVTs are very tunable

So.... heavier weights, and lighter secondary spring? That should correct it? BTW, I looked at the tires that the JACKA$$ sold me, and they are a matching size, is there a way to correct this with a sprocket change? Can I get away with replacing one sprocket instead of two tires??? I can get two different tires but I know that it will need sprockets soon so I was hoping to avoid changing both.
With the 400, any possibility it could be the stator? The machine truly runs great cold, and warm, but when it gets hot, it starts to sputter, but it still starts perfect. That's why I doubt that it is rings, as usually they become hard to start when the rings are pooched. |

cannot just switch sprockets, if the entire drive system ratios are not correct, trans will bind up or front diff will explode. machine is designed run 22 inch rears and 23 inch fronts, gear ratios are correct for these size tires. if you put tires on that are the same size front and rear, something is going to break GUARNTEED.

So if I had 24 inch rears, I would need 25 inch fronts?

And something did break, it ate a belt and melted the clutch cover, that's why I am seeking help. I don't understand why I can't remove a tooth on the rear sprocket to even out the rotations.
