If you haven't load tested the battery,it might be as simple as that. They can test good as far as voltage when charged but can loose voltage under a load if the cells are corroded or the regulator isn't charging at least 14 volts back the battery.Even new ones out of the box can do this. Plus I'd check the wires on the rev/netural indicator to see if there is a loose connection problem there. One problem these models did have was the reverse actuator on the right side of the engine going out. You might check its wiring and pull the manual lever and see if it makes any difference.
