Can't get correct torque on front hub
 

I'm having trouble getting the correct torque on my front hubs. I was told 144 inch/lbs. Just threading the nut on there takes over 180. It does not get tight until 200+.

What gives ?? I really wanted to ride this weekend but I'm worried that without the correct torque I may cause damage to the bearings or the Hillard clutch beyond the fact the the AWD will not engage properly.

Advice please.

My manual for my 500,I think they have the same front drive system,says never tighten beyond 144 in-lbs, I don.t think its suppose to be tight thats why it has a cotter pin so it will never fall off.

hmm no cotter pin, or a snap ring on mine. Only has one of those self locking nuts

no self locking,totally interfear with torque value,castle nut /cotter pin.

castle nut, I guess thats what you call it. It does kinda look like a castle now that you say that. Forgive my stupidity.
There is still no place for a cotter pin. Just that castle nut. I guess I'll try another torque wrench. Its taking more that 144 inch/lbs just to turn the nut.

ok I used a new torque wrench

it takes 17 ft/lbs before the hub assembly is not "loose" anymore.

any pointers?

first you will need to figure out how much torque it takes just to turn the nut, this is called rolling torque.
after finding rolling torque all following torques the wheel must be rotated both directions while torque is being applied

torque nut to 400 in lbs above rolling torque you should put some fluid in thru hub hole just to lube bearings while they are rolling, I know the fluid will just leak out but it helps. then back nut off 1\2 turn. jack allwheels off the ground start machine and engage 4x4 run in gear for a couple of rotations. then tighten nut again using the rolling torque plus 150 in lbs. after doing this jack front wheels up again and wiggle wheel to see if bearing are still loose. if they are still loose increase torque by 25 inch lbs until wiggle is gone
