I just got a sweet deal on a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500HO. I love it. But my problem is when the back tires start to spin it locks into AWD. The icon don't come on. But it locks in untill I let off the gas. I have read the on some models 1/5 a tire rotation it will engage. My question is how do I disconnect this feature but still keep my AWD switch working when I need it?

im not 100% sure but usually this means the roller cage is busted on the frontend. maybe somebody else will chime in and give a definite answer.

I not sure about the 2004 but on mine the switch has 2x4 and 4x4. If you are in 4x4 then I would agree with Mongrol - this how it is supposed to work. I am not sure about the icon either.

I have two 04 600 twin sportsmans and they both operate as you described..when slippage is detected in the rear wheels the front wheels engage till the wheel slippage stops.....I also thought I had a problem................

Also forgot to mention that there is no 4WD icon during this operation.......

With my machines the awd is engaged as long as the rear wheels detect slippage or until rpm drops below 3100 rpm.

In 2X4 mode not AWD the rear tires are the only ones to be under power.......
As I understood the front tires SHOULD NOT engage unless the switch is in AWD then with rear wheel slippage.......
......Caper............

Just to make sure, u have the switch in 2x4 with the front weels engaging?

The switch can be bad too.....you can check the voltage behind the switch to see if the switch is working properly.

First thing I would do is change the oil in the front hubs with Polaris LT fluid. There should be a allen plug on the hub where you drain and refill the oil.Rotating the hub to 3 or 9'oclock position should be the fill level.
