How were the old Explorers, magnums and express's?
I know they used common motors like the 500,425,400 but how were they as overall machines? Are they good work quads? Thanks.

Personally I love them. You can take a 400L and with the right mods hang with and even blow the 700s and some 800s.Now they all require more TLC than the new ones but the final result is worth it.The 425 is a great work horse with all the low end power you need.

What was the expedition?

IIRC the Xpeditions were just like Magnums except they were 5-speeds instead of automatics.

I had a '99 Xplorer 300. Bought it new for $3900 OTD. Sold it 2 years later for $3800. I would give that for it today if I knew where it was. I loved the two stroke power. Faster than the 500 I have now.

I have a 97 Express 400L - Great old 4 wheeler! I loved that 2 stroke power - Awesome power slides and donuts in the snow!!!!!!!!! I bought it new and if my new 500 HO holds up as well I will be a very satisfied customer.

The 500 Magnum was just a Sportsman with a straight axle, better for towing heavy trailers, the rear suspension did not carry the tongue weight of the trailer.

I've got an old 425 Magnum which is a primary work and trail machine on my farm. It gets a ton of use. The biggest gripe I have is the chain drive. You're always having to screw around with the chain. You have to watch the tension and keep the thing tightened correctly. If it slips your mind you end up throwing the chain in the middle of nowhere or wrecking the sprockets. Worst case it breaking the chain and cracking the case. That and you're always having to lube the thing. I cross creeks almost every day on the farm in the summer and I have to lube the chain every day or it starts grinding.
Only other real glaring deficiency is the charging system. It just doesn't put out enough power to deal with winching or even running all three lights for long periods of time. Overall it was a good work machine for it's time but chain maintenance is a glorious pain in the rear. |
