Bought scrambler today! minor ???

Ok, I picked up a scrambler 500 4x4 yesterday for $1800.00 Was sold as a 2002 but Im thinking it's newer. The hood says 2002 but it was obviously red and poorly repainted black to match the rest of the machine. Belonged to this 60 year old that used it to tow a trailer in his garden. It's a black quad, has the newer designed seat, s.s brake lines, and a drain under the belt. All the info I found in the search indicates an 04. Has cheap rear shock that I cant seem to adjust to hold any real wieght either. The vin was taken from the frame rail. Can I search or tell model year from vin? His title is being transfered to me from his wife, who mailed it to me prior to me even paying for it! (wierd) I have a bill of sale (all thats needed in NH) but Im convinced this is not an 02. On another note. It runs great but idles rough until warmed up. All stock, except rear rack. Missing two screws for brake resevoir which he changed all the fluid and lost. Very impressed. I need the 2 plastic front a-arm shaft gaurds. Need to adjust rear shock and chain.
Im thinking air box mod and new clutch springs to start. The rear shock is maxed out and still doesnt like my (big bones). It does not appear to be leaking and no signs of air/bleeding when removed and compressed. Options?

Yah, I used to rebuild my 3-1999 Poo Scrambler 400's 4x4's shocks every year, you have that Fox shock on the back of that bad boy? For your "big bones", go to the beefier spring, and crank up the tension
