500 Sportsman- ready to change fuel pump?

2 Attachment(s)
I have tore apart the fareings to access the fuel tank on my 2005 500 sportsman EFI.
I have discussed on another thread to get the replacement fuel pump, but had a question----
I tested the plug leading to the fuel pump- and have power- even with the key off. Does the key just ground the pump to run??
Also I included pictures - I have not found a fuse anywhere (is it near the ECU?)

Also- pertaining to the picture of the fuel tank/pump--how do I disconnect the fuel line?
I appreciate any help!

I would imagine it would jsut ground to shut itself off as you said. But i am at all no expert.

dissconnect the fuel pump wires via the plug. atart the atv to get the fuel pressure out of the line. place a towel under the connector to catch the dripping fuel. squezz the tabs of the white connector in the first pic togetther. then push the locking tab though the other side. then pull the fuel line off. to re install make shure the connector is clean. and reinstall in reverse.

i looked at a wireing diagram. there are 3 wires brown is ground, violet/white is the gas gauge ohm wire, and the red/dark green is the power wire to the pump. it seems the red/dark green is live all the time. but the fuel pump keeps the fuel system at a constant 39psi. it seems to me the pump will come on when the pressure becomes low.

you will need to prime the system when you put it back togetther. cycle the key on and off 6 times. wait 3sec on the on postion and 5 sec on the off postion. turn the key to start wait 5sec or untell it starts. if it dont start repeat cycling the key and retry.

nope im wrong there looks to be a relay for the fuel pump and the igntion coil. is controlled via the ecu.

I appreciate the quick responses!! Great to know about the priming (I would have struggled with that).
I will be ordering the pump tomorrow at A-zone, and install next weekend. (and post the reults)
Thanks again

(guessing) but if i remember reading it right, the ecu controlls the fuel pump and sends power to the fuel pump as it has to shut it self off after it is primed the system on the key turn on. imo.

In another thread it is mentioned to use a fuel pump E8198 part number (NAPA P72118)- but not sure if they are talking a different size engine.

Will this part number work on my 500 sportsman?
Thanks

This is a 2005 sportsman (500 efi).
I will be at Autozone soon- I can ask if it cross references to each year.
Thanks

They (a-zone) had it listed for a car (not atv).

Does anyone have a cross referenced number for the fuel filter (to buy at autozone)?
