Default Sportsman 800(transmission Q's)

I went riding a while back and my transmission filled with water/mud. I'm not sure why this happened, I was by no means treating it like a submersible. Anyway, the thing started whining and i drove it straight back to the trailer. Took it home and changed the fluid several times. Now it has a whine from about 20 mph up, but before this incident it had no noticeable such noise. Would a simple rebuild fix this or what. Please any opinions.

guessing, but it could be the bearings got pitted from the mud/water. welcome to the forum. if its getting worse i wouldnt keep driving it and maybe do more damage. imo

That is what i tend to think too. I would think that if any of the gears were damaged, there would be metal shards/shavings in the fluid. The noise has quietened after a few fluid changes.

most likely if its still going after some fluid changes, you might as well drive it and keep your ears open for it getting worse so it doesnt do major damage. bearing can go along or short time depending on thier condtion and the amount of pressure on them. imo

Agree, and next fluid change, run a transmission fluid through it, plus get a plug with a magnet on the end to see if you can catch any metal, then you will have a better idea

ok guys, i think i found what happened. there is a groove carved out of the housing, above where the back driveshaft connects to the transmission. Which caused it to fill with water to begin with. This leads me to believe that it must have been the pin that holds the knuckle on. Any input? I have the thing apart and nothing appears to be damaged though everything is dirty especially the bearings.

Also, my machine was manufactured 06/07/2006, so I am assuming it is out of warranty. correct?

Would you guys repair and reuse this housing?

Was you vent hose on the tranny on tight, its the only entrance for water to get in the tranny and is small and conected to the air box. The engine and belt housing with there much larger dia. intakes should of such up water MUCH faster and quit long before water would of work down the tiny tranny vent line.

Unless your tranny dip stick was not seated tight.

check the u-joints on the rear driveline, when a u-joint gets bad it will work that roll pin out of the yoke and cut a groove in the case and if you are riding in deep water it will get inside the trans. I learned this on my 02 SP 700, by the time i got home and removed the trans all the gears, shafts, chains, bearings were rusty. After replacing all the bearings and seals it still made noise in high. Found a used on out of a 800 on ebay. good luck.

I have disassembled it and cleaned it up as much as possible. It was filthy. I am actually surprised I made it back to my trailer with it looking like this. This was after about 4 fluid changes also. Nothing appears to be damaged(mainly speaking of gears). Removed all the bearings and gave them special attention. I'll let you guys know how it turns out...
