Default Scrambler 400 Rev limiter

i have a 97 polaris scrambler 400 4x4.It starts up and will rev up in nuetral, but if i put it in drive or reverse it will not rev up like the limiter is kicking in.Im not sure if it has to do with throttle sensor.my reverse light stays on dim and when i hit the throttle it goes off.Any ideas where to start or what to try to get this solved.

sounds like the tranny switch that tells the bike what gear it is in is messing up causing the limiter to kick in. imo

Do you know if that is located on the trans or the actual gearshifter?

If limiting in forward its possible limiter is beginning to go south. The limiter module is under the front panel. You can disconnect the black wire and see if solves problem. There are two modules under the panel and the limiter is the only one with a black wire. If this doesnt help then the gear switch could possibly be the problem if in forward and reverse light is still on,will cause limiting. The switch is in the shifter assy. OPT

Also spark seems to cut out sometimes.Sometimes ill crank it and it wont fire, ill pull the plug and crank it and no spark, let it crank for a little and the spark will start back up.Does the ETC cut out the spark?

The ETC is wired into the rev limiter. Which is also wired to the CDI module, so spark may be affected. OPT may be on the right path with the rev limiter going south.

just check to make sure the etc is set correctly to eliminate that as the issue. shoule be about 1/8" slack in the throttle.

When i check the slack in the cable for 1/8 inch slack,do i check it at the throttle lever or a 1/8 inch gap on the contacts on the ETC.

messed with it a little and i think it has to do with the ETC.I pulled the plug and only had spark at low RPM,pushed the throttle lever and i got spark. But now it will not start at all,not even a backfire or nothing.Im really getting stumped here,I tried unplugging the black wire and nothing. Also with the reverse light staying on dim, when i push the throttle it goes off.I am wondering is the ETC switch supposed to be closed or open.
