Speedo not working

I have an 2002 Polaris Sportsman 400, and the speedo said I was going 60 MPH! Then it started going crazy, up and down. Then it just stopped. Now it always reads 0 MPH. The miles don't work ether. How can I fix this?

Check to see if the AWD comes on. It that is out too the speedo needs to be replaced...not cheap.

It's probably your hall sensor, it's on the rotor. Try cleaning it first, may just be dirty. Otherwise replacing the sensor should take care of it.

Yes, the AWD dose work. Where is the hall sensor located?

Hopefully it is just the Hall sensor. I just replaced mine on Sat. and that is easy. That's why I suggested to check the AWD and also the odometer to know for sure if it is the speedo or hall effect. Cookie66 let us know.

my speedo does not work either, my 4x4 works fine, all other things on the instrament cluster work fine, i just have no speedo or odomiter. do you guys think the sensor will fix mine

When my Hall sensor went bad the speedo was bouncing all over the place even when at idle. It also read way too fast so if I went into reverse without the override depressed it "thought" the machine was going fast and shut it down. Those were my symptons and when I replaced the sensor it was all good. I am not 100% but it is my understanding that if the speedo cable goes bad on that year it also does not allow the 4X4 to work. For Cookie66 the sensor is attached on the right side brake rotor and goes up to the headlight pod. Small screw to attach and it has a round metal piece that rides close to the rotor.

build it with a 9v battery and a led with resistor and test it. sensor is in the right wheel attached to the brake disk bracket. 10mm bolt.
