2004 Polaris Sportsman 400 battery connected backwards!

I wasn't there when my son bought a new battery for his 2004 Sportsman 400. When he got home he connected the battery and smelled something burn and then just got a humming noise. I talked to him on the phone and the new battery has the terminals opposite of the old battery, which made the mistake easier to make. Now he put the old battery back in and still just gets a humming noise not from the battery. I told him to disconnect it and leave it until I can work on it with him on Saturday. Any ideas as to what may have fried or blown? And why would the terminals be opposite? I called the dealer and he triple checked the battery and said that he gave him the right battery and probably the previous owner put the wrong battery in it.

All opinions and input greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I don't live with him and I told him to leave the battery disconnected until I can look at it with him. It ran perfect before this. But when a battery is connected it makes a humming noise. I imagine a battery connected properly will not do any more damage though.

wheres the hum come from?

I asked him that too and he said not from the battery but somewhere from the motor! I know I'm vague with my info but just want to get as much info as I can when I look at it Saturday!

Thanks!

not shure where stuff is on it. but could be the stator thats in the motor. or the voltage regulator. im guessing somewhere near the battery. also not shure if it has a shure module where it controlles the awd, and other functions. on my 500 its a black box with alota wires under the front headlight pod.

if i would have to guess, he just fried some expensive parts. it doesn't very long when the power source is back wards. good luck and hopefully it's not too bad.

Can the average backyard mechanic troubleshoot this or is this a definite for the dealer to do?
