No,the hot light comes on at a set temperature reading. If the fan motor didn't work then it wouldn't take very long for water cooled engines to flash their hot light because they would get hot. OPT

mine was coming on instantly, I also have a gauge on it, it was cold. thought maybe it was some sorta safety thing to prevent you from running it with a bad fan.

Don't let any dealer try to charge you if you still have the black Chinese ecm module. Huge ATV Recall by Polaris - Sportsman and Scrambler

I'm looking at the black Chinese box and the letters and numbers or sort of different on the recall list but they match the order mines has the A 650 - AB

ALL 2005 and 2006 Sportsman 500s that had the Chinese ecm modules were on the factory list and letters were mailed out to the original owners to contact the nearest dealer for free replacement. I replaced so many, I lost count. I had a print out list of the ones we sold that I even called owners myself to set up a date and crossed out each one as they came in and were replaced. Took me some time and stragglers still were coming in with machines sold from our shop and ones purchased elsewhere, plus second and third owners that didn't even know about the recall. Still were coming in up until I retired in late 2010..Probably plenty still out there that somehow survived all these years.

Have similar problem with 2005 500. Replaced temp sensor on block. Still get heat lamp fan never comes on. Wired fan to 12v and after riding several miles heat lamp comes on and off. Bubble in system or ECM faulty. Replaced ECM 5yr ago.

Just jack the front end up with the tires barely off the ground, leave the radiator cap off and run the engine several minutes to remove any trapped air. You can squeeze the hoses as the manual states also, plus check that hoses are warm and pressurized. top off coolant in the radiator then the overflow bottle. If you've rehooked the fan back up to the ecm and the fan doesn't kick on I'd suspect another ecm.Not unusual for this to happen as I've replaced multiple ecms on the same machines.
