Check the wire connection on the sensor located on rear of head.

Sensor completes circuit, you might check wiring into harness and check that the ground wire(brown) on hot light is truly grounded.

If you have access to a heat gun, could focus heat on sensor and see if hot light comes on OR can use a torch,BUT remove tank and easy on the flame!!! OPT

Fan sensors are bad about going out because located at top of radiator. If coolant gets low, below the sensor they will short out. Temp sensors on the head are pretty reliable, only replaced a couple caused I broke the sensor tips!! Don't remember having to actually replace a bad one? OPT

let us know if/when you get something figured out for a gauge.... I think I might be interested in something like that myself... Does anybody know how to ohm out the sending unit? would it be just closed to open(or vise versa) or is there a resistance range?
