Greetings, I have a 2005 SP500 (carbureted) with about 3000 miles on it. Last year there was a great deal of wobble on the front universal joint where the prop shaft connects to the pinion shaft on the front Hillyard clutch. Last year I replaced the prop shaft yoke (and the cross & bearings). Now after about 500 miles it is starting to make some noise and is loose again. I have 3 questions: (1) has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it? (2) Would you replace the pinion shaft (which didn’t appear worn when I worked on it last year) and the prop shaft yoke eliminating any potential woggle where the two connect? (3) I have an ATV trip this weekend and want to pull the prop shaft off and ride about 125 miles (knowing I wont have 4wd). Is there any concern with doing this? Thanks for your help guys!!!

 

Couple things first make sure your u-joints are good it's best to install u-joints that you can grease . Your prop shaft should have a grease nipple on the rear that should be greased often I do mine weekly 3 pumps . The front and rear will have some slop the front is held on with a roll pin . I would grease it up and drive it would not give it a second thought it does not have very many miles on it .

 

Spdecat - Thanks for the reply. I do keep the zerks greased up (dont' do it every week but about every 150-200 miles). I does bother me a bit that the universal joint cant be greased. I did replace the universal joint bearings, cross, yoke and installed a new roll pin last summer. It was a still little loose when I replaced it all, but nothing like it was. I may be doing it again this winter. Thanks and keep the comments coming!!

 

can get greaseable u-joints from Napa or local parts store # 338

 

I should try to remember the next time I'm at the dealer to check out how much play ( slop ) a new one has . Just grease yours up and ride have fun get her dirty .

 

I did go ahead and check the 2010 SP500 HO with 425 miles that we also own and the connection is tight with no slop. I'm thinking I'll need to purchase a new yoke and try it again. Do I need to purchase the yoke from Polaris (like I did last time) or is there a less expensive source for this part? Thanks again!
