99 Polaris Sportsman 500 Issues

Hi,

I have a couple issues with a 99 Sportsman 500 that I picked up. I knew it had some issues, but just want to make sure I am on the right track. The AWD works, but the speedometer needle and odometer do not work. I put it on the atv lift and the front wheels with AWD work. Secondly, and possibly related to the issue is that when I bought it the owner had put a brand new battery in it and went riding. He stated that after a few hrs. the battery drained. He charged up the battery and again it drained after awhile. He told me he thought it was the stator because the lights flicker and the speedo doesn;t work, but the digital number show up for the odometer just don't change. I thought maybe the rectifier? Any ideas and can both be related? I did read about the HULL EFFECT but didn't know if that applied to a 99. Where should I start. I know there is a rectifier attached to the front screen and I happen to have one from an 01 Scrambler 500 would they be the same? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Replace the hall effect sensor located on the right front brake caliper(should solve speedo problem), plus check that all wires are hooked up on reg/rectifier (bad about red wire coming loose) If connections are good and NOT charging 14 volts back to the battery, then replace it! MIGHT be possible to check the regulator off the Scrambler, wires should be the same I think? (red, yellow, yellow/red, brown, and green) OPT

My 99 Sportsman 500 has the same problems and I have good connections on the rectifier and a new Stinger spp680 battery. Going to check over the wiring for loose or corroded connections and damaged wires, if I can't find any wiring problems I'm gonna buy a new rectifier.
