Well guys, I did it. I traded my 97 Scrambler 500 for the holdover 99 Scrambler 400 my dealer had, and I love my new 400. This thing is definitely not slow!! I am definitely going to enjoy my new bike. Would like to hear from other 400 owners to see what advice and opinions you guys have to give me.

The 400 is a very potent motor, so if you think its fast now, wait till you try a hopped up one!

If and when you decide to go that route my suggestion is to have all the motor work done by the same co. RCR, HPD, AAEN all do good work, but their motor mods are designed to achieve maximum performance when used with their pipes/silencers, ect. (thats not to say you cant have one co.'s pipe and have another do porting or something).

I would start by going to: baselnet.com/atv/own.htm (Adam's page)
godigital-design.com/96Polaris.html (Jack's)
and check out the various set ups people are running, and try to find someone with your riding style, mild to wild :)

I've only had my '99 since Nov. I asked a TON of questions (and still do!) before making my mods. RCR has exclusively performed all the motor work to mine, and I love it! so I recommend him.

Which ever way you decide to go, Good luck!

Hey Mitch -

I'm just curious as to why you opted for the 400 instead of the 500?

Mitch,
Jerry is right. The 400 is a great motor to modify. I'm not sure I want to go the extent he & Jack S. have but so far I've got the RCR kit midrange kit on mine. I like the 400 a lot, my brothers Sport was the reason I got the 400. Let other people ride your quad. It's fun to hear some one hop off and go man that thing is fast! You're telling me it's 4WD?!?!

Mitch,
just curious. When was your 400 manufactured? does it have the newer AWD switch? The reason I ask is I got burned when I got mine back in April 99'. (it was made in Feb. 98'!) anyway, best of luck with your new ride, and if you want to have some winter fun, head up north for the Lake Superior Ice Racing Series next January!!

Jack, first off I wanted to try something different, so I decided to get the 400 2 stroke instead of another 500 4 stroke. Plus,I didn't like the red plastic on the 99 Scrambler 500. Also, my dealer had no 99 Scrambler 500's left in his inventory, and I've heard so much talk and excitement about the 400 2 stroke motor that I decided to try it.

Someone mentioned something about how they got ripped off when they bought a 98 Scrambler 400 and the dealer told them it was a 99 Scrambler 400. Mine is a true 99, it has the new "AWD" switch, along with the other changes. However, looking through the brochures I can see how easy it would be to mistake a 99 Scrambler 400 for a 98 Scrambler 400 considering they look almost identical.

After doing some riding this afternoon I am very happy and impressed with my quad, and I am amazed at how easy the tires spin, especially on gravel!!

Hey A400L,
I noticed you didn't mention Hot Seat Performance. Any experience with these guys? Did you leave them out on purpose. Just curious.
Scott.
