If the cover is warped and hitting the front clutch(like most would do) and moving the small bracket at the bottom out or in doesn't help with the noise,you can just replace with the updated cover only.The backing plate is usually ok. I changed plenty of these soft warped covers,some had holes worn through em!! #5433542 replacement cover ain't cheap! Its'$87 at Cycle Parts Warehouse. You might Google around on this part number to see if you can get a better price. OPT

So the updated cover will bolt directly to the old back cover?

Bolts right on, even if the new one has a extra mounting bolt hole it does not matter.
