Is Reverse considered High or low range?
 

If you hold the reverse override down can the ATV go as fast in reverse as forward or is in coincided to be low range?
The reason I,m asking is to know if is better not pull another ATV out of a swamp hole while in reverse or better pull him out in forward in low range or does it not matter?

If your skilled enough can you do 55 plus mph in reverse like foward with the overide held down?

And if it s possible can someone put it on youtube please. LOL

I would think it would be considered low, but I do seem to recall a time or two going pretty fast in reverse. Maybe it just seemed faster going backwards.

Fastest I've dared to go in reverse pushing the override button on either the Outlander I have now or the Sportsman X2 I used to have was maybe 20. Didn't sound like it was winding out or over-revving or anything like that. Also, doesn't seem that either had the torque of the forward low range when in reverse either. Maybe somewhere in between. I think we need OPT on this one.

Actually kinda close to each other versus low range gear. 6 teeth different. 24 teeth on drive gear(16),30 on reverse gear(12). Low is the 36 tooth big sprocket.(gear 22) This is on a 2001 Sportsman gear cases. Don't have the foggiest on the newer 550 and 850 as their set up I've never tore into one before I retired (thank goodness)

So, it's probably in between with it being closer to low range than high range?

Yep,that's why you can still burn rubber in reverse on pavement. Won't go as fast in reverse as forward,but sure feels like it at times.Guess it's like what Scooter said plus if you aren't looking that carefully,just seems faster backwards.

In one of my owner's manuals it said what the gear ratio was and I figured that it would be around 35 mph top speed in reverse. I can't remember which quad it was though. Anyway it's between high and low.

My understanding is that the chain for reverse is much smaller and not as strong as the chain for forward gears. I would not pull in reverse if it was me. Personally, I would just use a winch.
