Whats the idle speed?

Check that the belt is riding in the center of the front clutch especially if it's a 700 model.Seems we had quite a few of these we had to shim the rear clutch out a bit to align the clutches and drive belt to keep stress off the rear clutch and stop the grinding. Plus there is an adjustment on the shift cable that may help.

Got idle turned as low as I can without it dying. Tried to adjust cable to no avail. I disconnected the cable and worked it by hand, the detent seems to be seating in every position.I can shift it back to low and then back to high it might grind might not. Orginal shims still in place on driven clutch.Startin to get to me ! I appreciate your help. Thanks

My bad! It is a 500 efi 4x4 ranger

500 uses basically the same gear case as the 700. Problem area also on these models were the wide shift forks and wave springs in the gear case that could start grinding after awhile. If it still grinds with a low idle and no pressure from the rear clutch, this is the area that may have to be checked into.
