500 sportsman/air intake

Glad you noticed also. I think it's the size because of the small 36mm carb on the SP500. I've always thought that a bigger carb would do wonders for this motor.

I had a 39mm carb with high air flow intake that went into the airbox with a K&N on it on my 97 Sportsman 500. It did do wonders for the Sportsman. I could easily hang with anybody on the trails. Very very fast. I got the kit from four stroke tech in PA. I had alot of extra weight due to aftermaket goodies plus I had the heaviest tires made the vampires all around and it still would blow away a 98 scrambler with a pipe a clutch on top end in a straight race. Real close race at the start and soon it would just take off. I put it up on the road twice to see if I could hit top speed but both times I had the speedometer buried and it still had alot left. I know I went at least 10 mph faster once the needle buried and then I would run out of room so I never did reach top speed. Very big increase in performance but a bitch to install.

Scott, you are right I'm slipping. I guess I can't get over the shock that they would put a CV34 Mikuni on a 500cc motor. I'd love to find something that can add a little better top end performance. You can really feel that it hits a wall at about 35 mph. It seems like it just wants more fuel. I've though that a 38mm or thereabouts may be about the best combination. I do know of one with a 42mm that 4ST did that doesn't run real well off the line.
I really don't want to get too carried away with modifying the engine, but a carb and possibly a cam are not too severe. The damn thing need to breathe a little.
