What's the proper gas:oil mixture for this 88 trail boss 250R/es?

Hi I just bought a 1988 Polaris Trail Boss 250R/es with a little bit of fuel left in her. Got her running but out of gas and knowing that it is a 2 stroke, and the previous owner bypassed the self-mixing thing and the oil tank and sensor and a bunch of stuff, bottom line is it takes pre-mix now. However, I don't know the ratio?

I was told 50:1 or 32:1 or 16:1 but with so many things that can go wrong (blowin the engine..!), I wanna be positive that I'm doing it right!

40-1 with a good quality oil. Doesn't have to be a synthetic "smokeless" oil,but any good oil for premix/injector system as most two stroke oils are. Penzoil,Quick Silver, etc would work fine.

I just put 50:1 in there from my sled and chainsaw and it runs good but doesn't idle... Would a bad mixture cause that or is it just my carb with the jets and whatnot?

Another question, just bought a new ignition switch and now the quad fires up without the key in!!! What happened? I'm sure I did it all right; all wires with the same colour (black, black/white, red) and I put the last two wires together because there was no more matches from the old switch lol (old wire was brown, new wire is green)

50-1 shouldn't affect idle.Probably pilot jet is stopped up if idling it up a little doesn't help.Think you need to recheck the wiring on the switch.

I did recheck the wiring on it, and rewired it twice, and one time they sparked! (If I remember correctly it was green to red) I even had the ignition switch completely disconnected and guess what, it started!!!!!

Then I'd be looking into the left control switch or possibly a shorted out solenoid if it starts with out an ignition switch. Sounds like somethings screwed up.

I'm gonna check of there's power going through the solenoid next time it stops raining (no garage). And what's the left side control switch? The starter? Or run/off switch?

Left control switch/wiring could have a short causing problems.Item #3. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Ooh yeah I took that apart during the whole process in checking the wiring and everything seems good but I didn't really take all of the wiring out. However, when I did take it apart, I lost one of the little prongs from the run/off switch but I made a new one (it was the shorter one, not the ground prong). It works now.

I think it's the solenoid... Idk for sure yet though. I still need to test it
