400 Scrambler with loose steeering
#1
I remember reading a post back a month or so ago about play in the front end on a Scrambler. Didn't pay much attention then but now that I have one and after several rides the front end has some play. I can turn it a little left and right without the wheels moving. It is more of an annoyance than anything. Anybody remember what the solution was. I know my TB with many more miles on it doesn't do this.

I am in the process of tightening up the steering on my 1991 Trail Boss 250. I also have a Sport 400 and the steering is similiar to your atv. There are 2 bushings that seem to wear over time. One is about 1/3 down the steering shaft, I just reaplced mine last night. This cleaned up any "Front to Back" slack. There is another bushing I have on order from the loacal dealer. It sits right at the bottom of the steering arm below where the tie rods connect. This is quite worn on my atv. This affects the side to side play. It is riveted in place. You may also want to check the inner and outer tie rod ball joints for any looseness.
Hope this helps. Loose sloppy steering is a pain in the butt.

The HPD lower steering bushing is awesome. It takes a little patients and skill to install but front end play is a thing of the pasts. I ride in the mountains with tons of rocks My steering was so trashed i had to replace both outer tierod ends, my lower left ball joint, the steering post and the lower steering bearing. I used the new Hot Seat steering post which is stronger and lighter ( not nessisary ).
The HPD steering bearing makes the steering solid and i have had no additional problems. I have even added an Aaen adjustable steering dampener to smooth out the ride. I asked Darrel Olson ( HPD ) if they are going to make one for the top bearing but he said he hasn't gotten too many calls for that.
