gas leak 2001 magnum 325 need help.

I recently bought this used for my daughter. I have been hiding it in my shed until her birthday in a few weeks. When I bought the machine it was almost out of gas and it had to be on reserve to run it. I just filled it up on Saturday and today when I went into the shed it stinks of gas.there was a huge spot on the floor and almost all of the gas is gone. I couldn't find any clean spots that would indicate where the leak is and I haven't had a chance to fill it again to try and locate it but I was wondering if there may be something to look for that may be an easy fix. I read about a gasket by the shut off valve or maybe the fitting under the tank. I'm really hoping there isn't a hole or crack in the tank. i am not sure if the tank can be pressurized to find a leak?? Any help would be great. I am calling the dealer I bought it from to see if they will help because in its current condition, it should be ridden. I am really bummed and I need to fix this soon. Really don't want to disappoint my daughter. Thanks!

id start by putting some more gas in it to see where the leak is coming from

Pull the dip stick and see if it's over full or the oil smells like gas. If it does, needle and seat could be sticking, leaking out the overflow and into the engine.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Magnum-Boss-325-2000-2002-Carburetor-Rebuild-Kit-Carb-3131363-522-/231539134633?hash=item35e8ced0a9&vxp=mtr

I will check that tonight but I was wondering if it would leak like that just when sitting??Sorry carbs not my thing. If I fill it back up what would be the best way to see if it is an issue with the carb?

Put some clean paper towels under it when you put in a little gas or just feel the carb over flow tube at the end to see if it's wet. The 325 doesn't like gas in the oil for sure. I've had to rebuild several cranks because of this.Be sure to check the oil level and smell for gas.

was going to mention that too, but didnt think the gas would flow thru the fuel pump...

Thought so too,but if the needle and seat are sticking it can pull a vacuum of its own into the carb and engine and contaminate the oil. That's why I've had rods thrown on the 325 before. No other Polaris engine really had this problem.

so the 500s are ok to leave the gas on? ever since i got my 500 ive been not shutting the gas off because its kind of a hassle lol

Imo if any machine has a fuel shut off valve use it when you're through for the day. I had to really preach this to people especially on the old 2 stroke machines that it was a straight shot from the tank to the carb if the needle and seat were bad.I didn't like having to drain crank cases on top of rebuilding carbs. Most problems on the 325 were the first two year models (2000-2001) on throwing rods. Almost everyone I had to rebuild, the oil was contaminated with gas.Like I mentioned the 325 was the only one that really was bad on this. Possibly because of the car type crank shaft and thin rod bearings.Guess I'm a little paranoid on this from previous experiences.. The 325/330 were good engines and we sold quite a few over the years, but when I hear about leaking gas from one I freak.. :)

ive always shut mine off till i got the 500, its just in a position now that when i get it in the shed i cant reach it(have to climb off the back to get out lol) but im just gonna start pushing er in after shutting the gas off just in case...and i know what ya mean with the preachin lol im always the one telling my buddies to turn their gas off and when they catch my quad sitting with the gas on i hear about it for the next week haha im slipping!

It's especially important to turn the gas off when transporting the quad. If there's a leaking problem it will show up when the fuel is sloshing around.

Now I'm freaked out too....I only ran the machine for about a 1/2 mile after I filled it and it seemed to run fine. I don't know if a stuck needle would cause it to run bad. The true test will be when I get home to check the dipstick. I am calling the dealer that I bought it from to have a conversation with them. I really hope they are willing to work with me on this. They assured me this machine had been gone thru... I know there's a sucker born every second...

you will def know if the gas went into the case, ur oil will be topped off with gas

Talked with the dealer and they said they would help me out. I brought it back to them this a.m. so hopefully I will know the problem in a few days. They didn't say they would pay for the entire repair but that we would work something out. The fact that they didn't just say too bad it's used and walk away from it makes me feel better about the situation. One week from my daughter's birthday when I can finally give it too her.....I'm excited.

Good that the dealer is working with you. Hopefully it's just something simple. I think you might just get a big hug from your daughter when she gets to ride it.. :)

Well, just got the news that is was the needle and seat in the carb.. It filled the motor with gas and also ate away the air filter. the dealer is rebuilding carb, replacing the air filter, draining oil and filter, with no cost to me for parts and we will split the labor. To me more than fair considering is was a used purchase. kudos to Northway Sports in East Bethel, MN. You have a loyal customer...

Good deal! That's why I was freaked out worrying about gas in the oil. Sounds like they're taking care of the problem..
