2006 Polaris Sportsman 500 EFI HO Bogging Out

I have a 2006 Sportman 500 EFI....When I first ride it, it runs great, but after about a half hour to hour of hard riding it will bog out when throttling, then die when come to a stop. Sometimes all I have to do is turn the key off then back on and it will run for another 30 minutes, and sometimes I have to let it sit for 5 minutes before turning it back on and then it runs good. There is a new ECM installed, I have changed the fuel filter, and on another board I read a guy's post saying that the gas tank is absorbing heat from hard riding in the Tucson desert, and to put insulated foil on the bottom of the tank to prevent the gas from becoming to hot? Well I did that yesterday. I am thinking if this doesn't work, the last thing would be to change the fuel pump? Anyone else had this problem. A real pain in the backside, and interrupts some nice riding.

Heat can cause problems, but do a fuel pressure test to see if the fuel pump is weak to start with. Should hold 39 psi with no appreciable drop in pressure. Plus if fuel pump is ok,then could be a wiring issue to the map sensor. This was the main harness "kit" we had to install. Plus check all sensor wiring for any bare or soft feeling wires that could be melted internally. Better sensor harness repair kits are available from here if needed.Only The Best

Thanks. I have been learning more and more about these bikes every time I work on them. Question #1, is there a book on them that will tell me the easiest and best way to access the fuel pump and other stuff. Like the books you used to buy for cars? Question #2, check all wires or certain wires? I am not savy with the wiring of the bike, may need a little direction as to where and what wires to look for.

Service manual can help on electrical trouble shooting with the guides along with the wiring schematic. Here's one for 5 bucks.2006 Polaris Sportsman 500 EFI Service Manual PDF Download

Hi,

You may have a problem with the spark plug running too hot. Try a colder plug. Standard plug is BKR6E. Cooler is BKR7E or BKR8E. The NGK IX plugs are more expensive but a good choice.
