2015 Polaris Sportsman Touring XP drivetrain noise
I am having an issue where it sounds like the gears are slipping if I hit the throttle really hard and also after letting off when the engine brake is applied. Also, the drive train that goes to the front also rides again the gear shift box. I will attach pictures and a video here shortly.
Thanks in advance! https://postimg.org/image/cdlu6fza9/ |
Sounds like it's more than the normal gear lash that most have.Times like this is where extended warranties are worth the cost.

Man that sounds terrible. I do hope you opted for the extended warranty as OPT said. The Grizzly 660 I previously had made horrible sounds on engine braking(just one of the things wrong with it) but it was older and had a lot of miles on it. It sounded like the clutch was slipping and the engine braking was quite ineffective.

Any advice on where to begin troubleshooting? I do not have an extended warranty.

You don't say which engine, but I'd pull the prop shaft leading to the front diff. Could be as simple as stripped splines in the prop shaft making the grinding noise especially if it's a mud machine or if u-joints haven't been greased.

It sounds like it is coming from the front shaft but it is hard to tell. If I accerlate slowly it does not make the noise but as soon as I hit the throttle hard it makes that sound.
Also, is the front drive shaft suppose to ride against the gear shift box? And yes, I do ride it through mud a lot. Recently changed all the fluids. https://postimg.org/image/4bpbzz7dz/ |
Shaft isn't supposed to rub against anything, but neither were the prop shafts on some earlier model Scramblers and Sportsman 500s.. They'd rub up against the water pump covers. Some of this was in the design, some was because of soft or worn motor mounts. That's something else you could check. A simple crowbar prying around on the engine could test those out. If worse came to worst, a simple die grinder on that certain protruding area that's rubbing could solve that problem.

It is an 850 touring sp. Any idea what that noise is on hard acceleration or deaccerlation?
Thanks so much for the help! |
