Default 2005 ATP 500 4x4

I recently purchased a 2005 ATP 500 knowing it had a few issues. when I went and looked at it 2 weeks ago it started up by pull starting it not with the key. when I picked it up a few days ago it would not start either way acted as if it was starving. when I got it home cleaned the fuel tank and fuel lines put fresh fuel in it and placed the jumper cables on it and it started right up all the lights and all seem to work and runs fine. When I go to take the jumper cables off it dies and everything goes dead. I know the battery is bad but could this be the only issues or something else? I know a car can have a bad battery and if all charging equipment is operating properly it will continue to run if the is the same case where do I start looking or checking ?

Get a new battery to start off with. Jumping a dead battery can sometimes cause problems. Once started check that the battery is receiving at least 14 volts from the ecm module. If it's not the charging circuit in it may be fried.2203130 KIT-SUREPOWER ECM, 4011085

If the battery doesn't charge at least 14 volts the ecm would be the cause because it contains the regulator along with circuit breakers and also controls the fan and several other functions. Not too many tests on it,but if you want a manual here's a cheap one that does have a few tests.2005 Polaris ATP 500 Service Manual PDF Download Plus a pick up coil can cause starting problems on the 425 and 500 engines if it's dirty or too far from the flywheel.May not be a bad idea to clean it and the flywheel area.
