so the old regulator has 2 black wires with white tracers. a solid black. a red and a brown. the new regulator has brown, red, yellow/red, yellow and a black/yellow.

Sounds like you're getting the reverse limiter in there especially with that solid black wire. Get the pdf manual for 5 bucks and it has the wiring schematics and anything else you need. Both the 2x4 and 4x4 share the same regulator.1995 Polaris Magnum 4X4 Service Manual PDF Download

Ok,then hook the red to red, solid yellow to stator yellow,yellow/red to stator yellow/red,yellow/black to stator yellow/brown wire.Brown wire is a ground and shows a connection for it also.

okay, that was what i was assuming but didnt want to hook it up wrong and fry something. because the only one that didnt have a match is the stator yellow/brown. and the regulator black/yellow

A lot of aftermarket regulators don't match colors correctly. Main ones to match are the red,yellow,yellow/red. What one is left over just hook it to the last stator wire. In your case stator yellow/brown to regulator yellow/black. If it has a bullet connector on the brown regulator wire, looks like you can pull the brown ring connector wire that's grounded to the old regulator and chunk it.Then insert the brown regulator wire in its place on the harness ground connector.

Yes 22 volts, way too much. Can fry a battery fairly quick and can on occasion short out cdis.Good that you caught it in time.
