My guess it is broke! ...

I can almost hear Adam Savage from MythBusters saying, "Well, there's your problem."

Rather hoping its just the circlip on the end thats worn.......

Gear case will need to be removed and replace the hub kit, and seal. Probably needs wheel shafts to as they are worn. Just estimated that very job in my shop today. Your not going to like the cost. It's a tad spendy.
