2001 Polaris Scrambler 400L Getting Trail Ready
#12
Got the winch mounted. Works perfectly. Swapped the headlights for LED pods for better lighting and lower voltage draw. I wired in a voltage meter since I had one laying around.
Next I need to make a bash plate for the part of the winch that is exposed. I also plan to make a lower mount for the radiator still, not sure how I am going to do that yet. I think I may also try to make a mud guard for the front winch/steering area so not as much mud and water gets in there.

So I got a chance to address my backfiring issue. I took the carb apart and found it to be exremely clean. I then went and pulled the needle out of the slide and someone had put the clip on the top spot... I moved it to the middle and adjusted the fuel screw to about 1.75 turns out and now its running perfect. I will probably have to adjust it again when it warms up but for now its all good.
I also changed my mixture from 1:32 to 1:36 to cut down on the smoke a little and that ended up helping way more than I expected.
I am working on running the oil tank lines into the carb feed lines. I think I know how I am going to do it.
I tested the winch and it works great!
My front right wheel bearings are pretty tight so I am going to go ahead and replace those, and maybe the front brakes while Im at it.
Now I need to address some tires not holding air issues and then I will be ready to go!

Not necessarily however since I did not do the rebuild, I am not sure how many hours the engine has on it. So I am planning to lean it out as I go through tanks. I would much rather it be rich than lean... I would rather buy new plugs than burn the top end up.

Only way to tell (rich/lean) is a plug chop at each throttle position...no need to guess...
Changing oil ratios will impact A/F ratio...more oil means less gas which means leaner conditions...
Oil mixed is the only lubrication that motor gets...smoke out the pipe means more protection...if worried about fouling plugs run iridium...

Got it. I wasn't thinking the rebuild could still be that new. If the oil injection still worked pre-mixing the first tank or two would work.
