I have had the chain break twice since it was new. The first time was two weeks after I bought it. Today I came off a jump and went a whole 2 1/2 feet off the ground and broke the case. I heard a whinning noise as soon as I landed and hit the brakes. I looked under the quad and oil was pouring out. The case is broke. Looks like the chain tightened up when the suspension compressed it pulled hard on the counter sprocket and broke the case. The chain wasn't too tight. I leave it loose after the the second chain.
Anyone else have this problem? |
let off the gas when you are in the air! I jump my 500 4x4 all the time up to about 4 and 5 feet and haven't had any problems yet!

What year is your scrambler and is it a 4x4,polaris has had a lot of the 4x4 cases breaking,I was riding with a friend and he went over a jump and broke his second case, polaris fixed them for FREE.

My brother did the same thing on his. Luckily it was still under warranty and he got the case fixed for free.
After I saw that, I built my own guard to replace the cheap plastic one Polaris installed at the factory. I bought a small steel plate at Lowes and bent it in a vise to match the bend of the factory guard, except I made it about three inches longer than the factory one for extra protection. I've snapped one chain since, but now there's no way that the chain can get to the trans case. I'd recommend everyone with a Scrambler look into something like this. |
It seems that jumping is the issue? I do not jump so i would not have to worry about this if I bought a Scrambler?

Let off the gas mid air, and make sure the chain is adjusted correctly. 5 years on a Scrambler 4x4, and no broken chains or sprokets (lots of other broken parts through user error!). I keep it slack, and lubed.
Big air is not a Scrambler thing - to heavy to move about mid air. |

HPD is now making chain tensioners for the concentric drive models. It might be worth your while to invest in one. |
I'd like to see your homemade chain guard. Is there a way to get a picture of it on the net?

well, you can add one more to your list, my friends sport did the same thing.
