I changed the oil on my parents SP500 today. The local Polaris dealer sail I had to use the Polaris brand oil. The stuff was $5.50 a quart. That seemed insane to me. It just says 0w-40 synthetic oil on the carton. Does anyone know if you can just put valvoline synthetic of equal ratings in it? What about the filter. Is there a Fram equivelant to it? Any help would be great.

Zaskar, I know of 4 aftermarket companies that make oil filters for your machine. LeMans Pro Series, Fram, Vesrah, and Emgo. I know at the Polaris dealer you will probably pay around $10 for one. I've tried an Emgo in our Sportsman already, fit just like perfectly and was of high quality, plus cheaper. Emgo also makes a cool looking chrome colored one, if you want to dress up your machine a little bit. Out of Dennis Kirk, the Emgo chrome is $7.99, black is $5.99, Vesrah is $11.99, Fram $9.99, and Pro Series is $7.99. Also, you're not supposed to use automotive oil in your ATV. If you did already, no problem. But almost everyone I talk to say to use a motorcycle oil in them. Hope this helps.

Yeah ditto what rooster says. Auto oils dont have the friction modifyers that the cycle oils do. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic cycle oil in 10w-40 & 20w-50. Its over $7.00 a quart, but i think it is worth it.

According to another forum member the Fram part # is PH6017a. I have cross-referenced this to Wix part # 51358 although, I havent tried either of these filters yet.
