any 97 400 Scrambler owners out there?

I was curious how much trouble you guys have w/ the chain for the front wheel drive? How do you tighten it if at all? How often do you replace it? I was curious why Polaris added the drive shaft to the front unless it was a problem. Can you also change the number of teeth on the front if you want to regear? I also was wondering why the 97 was 490 lbs & the 98 was 520lbs? The front drive shaft on the 98 cant weight 30lbs can it? I think the 97 had 6" of travel & the 98 has 8.2 & concentric drive so maybe thats the diff in weight. I was interested in the 97 vs the 98 since it's 30 lbs lighter already & if I took another 60lbs off w/ the normal stuff then it would be a 430 lb Scrambler.
Thanks for any input.

why would you want ot regear the front? it wouldnt really do anything at all you onyl use it when you dont have traction...
I tihnk that would be a waster, and the front shaft probably doesnt weigh 30 lbs but im sure that the shaft and all the joints and the rear concentric drive assed weight

Jim,
I have a 97 Scrambler 500... and it has the factory front sprockets and chain.. I've adjusted it one time in the last year and a half.... I think they went to the other set-up to get more customers... they are slowly getting away from the chain drive front ends all together.. More of an ease of maintenance issue.

I noticed that when most of the guys start getting into the high hp range w/ the 2wd Sports, that they go to taller gearing for more top end speed because they have too much low end power & just spin. As soon as I get a chance I'll be at that point also (porting, high compression etc.). So I thought it would be great if I too could regear the front & back & if I could save 30lbs in the process then why not? I havent looked closely but I dont think I'll be able to keep the concentric drive & the front chain if I were to combine a 97 & 98 Scrambler together. I would like to keep the 98 concentric drive w/ the long travel front end but use the 97 front chain.
