Oversized Gator Tires on a Scrambler 500 4x4
#1
I just recently put some Gators on my 2000 Scrambler 500 4x4, they look awesome on it. The machine pulls them great, it's not quite as snappy but I expected that. My only concern is with the clutching. I only went ONE size larger than stock and went to 11" rims in the front for weight reduction. Everything seems fine, and it handles great. It's a lot more stable on ditch crossings and such.
What do you think?? Should I install a sport/utility clutch kit or will I be fine.
I have some pictures of it on my Photos page if you would like to see what it looks like.

Yep, those Gators look good. Getting the right tire/wheel combination for these things can be tricky, accounting for the 4x4 gearing. Can you tell us where you found them and what sizes? And I'll second SnowDrift's question about the winch. Finding one is no problem, but how did you mount it?

I stand corrected. I found Gators that will fit stock rims. Let us know how they do in different terrains. I am in the market for a set. Was going to use Dirt Devils or Bear Claws, but not sure, now.
What is the actual height on yours, compared to the tire size stamped on the sidewall? The stock Titans seem to run a little small.

Thanks for the complements. I am very pleased with them to.
Nobody said that you have to stay with a 10" rim in the front. I figured the aluminum would be lighter than the extra rubber so I was looking for larger rims anyway. I only wanted to go one size larger than stock because I didn't want to put too much of an extra strain on the front 4x4 linkage. I looked and called all over and te biggest problem that I had was finding rims in the size that I wanted. This is what I ended up with:

Total of $438.00 for the set of four. Add shipping and you will be $500 and change.
Handles awesome...........I wear extra mud now, especially when I turn. My advice is to keep your stock set of tires for hardpack and general riding and slap these bad boys on when you plan on getting messy. I think I have gained about 3" or so ground clearance. But it still handles nice.

I posted some close-ups of the wench and mount for thouse of you interested. The cover is from Cabellas but I purchased the wench elsewhere. They do sell it as the Superwinch Trailtamer1500. It a 1500lb winch with 25' of cable that does a great job. I am hoping not to have to use it with these new tires though. If I was to do it again I would go with the 2000lb unit. Not because of the added pulling capacity, but because it comes with 50' of cable instead of 25'. You may get into a situation where you can't find a tree close enough and you (I) wished I had the extra cable length. You can pick up the 1500lb. unit for $130.00 to $170.00 depending on where you buy it. Expect to pay between $200.00 & $250.00 for the 2000lb. unit (recommended).
I hope I helped.
Later
I purchased the mount from Cycle Country for around $70-$80
(it has been a while ago I can't remember for sure).

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

The K1500 weighs in at around 12 lbs. and with the mounting bracket I have probably on added 15 lbs. I don't jump with it, but trail riding and hill climbing are un-effected. As far as drag racing I am usually ahead until they get into third gear. But to answer your question, it wouldn't come off easily. It's there for keeps. I was the only one running the Dunes last year with a winch. I did everything everyone else did except win at the drags, but my scrambler is stock except for a K&N filter.
I put the Gators on because my Scrambler is now my mud/trail machine. When I feel like drag racing I take out my Raptor.
