When changing oil in my 500 Scramblers, I have drained the oil from the sump tank, but never taken off the line to get the remainder of the oil out of the engine. Can this be done without removing the bottom skid plate? What are the steps to doing so? I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I guess I didn't take the time before to take everything apart to do it properly.

Snowdrift, you're not sounding ignorant at all. I'm only familiar with the 400's. Hopefully someone with pipe in with 500 experience. If not, within a couple of days, if no one helps, I'll check with the buds at the dealer.

On the scrammy 500HO 4x4 2003 you have to remove the skid plate and under it(above it) is a circular hole. Go to the other side,right hand facing foward, the drain for the engine is is on the left hand side of the hole. there's about a cup of oil in there. I jacked mine up with a floor jack on the left to give it a bit of a lean to drain it all. The manual says to take the outlet hose off and clean the screen in the sump also, bit of a pain and not really nessessary as the oil is already going through the filter, unless you have had some sort of major engine break down. reinstall all drain plugs, put on new filter, fill with oil to full mark, run for a couple of minutes,top up oil again as it will drop, run again, check one more time. open beer, light cigy butt, pat yourself on back and tell the old lady that you have to go for a ride to check for leaks.

don't want to add more $$$ to the job but if you're changing the oil,synthetic stuff oil is the way to go,it help a lot and run good...

Most dealers sell a nice "Polaris 4-stroke Oil Change Kit" -- comes with three quarts of Polaris synthetic 0-W40 oil, a new drain plug washer, and a Polaris oil filter. Saves me about 10 bucks over buying it all separately. Basically, you can think of it as getting a free Polaris oil filter...

Yea I forgot, manual says to use 0-40 synthetic oil. I couldn't find any except at the dealers so I used 5-40 that I bought at wally world for a lot less.

Mobil 1 just started making 0w40 synthetic thats what I'm going to use from now on, Amsoil also makes 0w40.

Thanks for the info, guys. I always use Amsoil. My grandpa has used it in hit sleds for more years than I have been alive and never had an engine failure, so that sounds like a good enough basis for me.
As far as the oil change kit, how much is it? I pay $10 for a filter and $5 or $6 for 0w-40 Amsoil. If there is an alternative to that, then I would listen. Thanks again, SnowDrift |
Think it runs about $20 at my dealer. I guess I'm still payin' for the name! But to my knowledge, there is nobody that carries Amsoil in or around Buffalo, NY.
