Could somebody give me some advice on this! A friend of mine has a 500 sportsman which the 4X4 will not engage. The speedometer doesn't work either. I thought that the 4X4 engagement is sensed by the speedometer, is this correct? What should I look for. TIA

I had the same problem on my 2000, the speedometer was bad, it has a small computer in it that controls a few different functions, one of them being the 4 wheel drive.

Same thing happened to my 2000 mag500...the speedometer still worked fine but the 4x4 wouldn't engage... a new speedo runs for about 180 bucks i think thats a little steep but thats all i could find and i wanted to go muddin again soon..later

hi

If you are comfortable with electrical diagnostics, check the ground (brown wire) to the speedo before you replace it (hook up a 12v test light between the pos battery terminal and the brown wire. If it lights up you have a proper ground). The AWD went out on my ’01 HO and I traced it to that bad ground. Hot-wired a new one in and everything’s fine.
