Ok guys and gals. I need a little know how for this problem and since it's my Dad's Explorer 300 and not my Scram, I'm not the most knowledgeable on Explorers. The Explorer will idle fine until he has been riding for a few miles of so. Then when he stops for a second, it just dies on him and won't idle. He hasn't had any modifications done to it. I know that after breakin ypou sometimes have to adjust the cable becuase they tend to idle faster after you've broke them in, but he's had his for 3 years now and it's just starting this problem. Could it be the ETC switch and if so, can someone tell me where it is located on this bike and how to determine if it needs to be replaced or not. Any opinions and answers are greatly appreciated. clean the carb, it might be a bit gummed up and running on the lean side, causing the piston to get a lil too hot.

my trailblazer was doing the same thing for a long time and all i had to do was crank the air screw out and the idle screw up a lil bit and now it idles with the best of em lol

I recently had a similiar issue with a '89 Trailboss - adjusted the throttle cable, nothing changed, adjusted the carb, nothing changed.

THEN! I discovered one of the plastic tubes coming off the carb had melted against the exhaust pipe and sealed shut. I pulled this tube off the carb and my problem was fixed! The TB idled fine! Didn't look up which tube in the service manual before posting this message, but I assume my engine was having some sort of oxygen constraint problem causing it to always die at idle, but otherwise run ok when the throttle was applied.

In the end I replace the tube with a new one and rerouted away from the exhaust.

It's a long shot, but you might explore your problem from this angle.

Do a compression test, if under 100lb the piston is scored. The 300 engines had a problem of not oiling enough at low speeds, once the compression is lost they won't idle good anymore.

well this sounds familar! My Kodiak wouldn't idle right when it got hot...........turns out my choke cable was sticking (it was off on the bars......but the cable was sticking) just work the choke fully open then shut (while the bike is off) and then try it.

P.S. this also explains how come i was burning so much more gas than i used to!!! and the plug was fouled.

Thanks everyone! I will check on the choke cable. A # of people have suggested this, so I'll try it first. Then I'll rear into the card and make sure it's not obstructed in any way. I also had a hose melt against my exhaust on mine, but it didn't have the same effect. I'll check that also. CED, as soon as I got some time off, I'll give ya a holler. I finally got the bike broken in again after the port job and I'm itching to let this thig rip. Thanks again everyone.
