Any one know the stock air screw setting on a 2001 400 Explorer. Also I have a clicking sound when running over semi-rough ground coming from somewhere in the back that is driving me nuts. Any ideas? Mudden in Mich.

I have a 99 xplorer 400.I think the settings will be close to yours. There have been some internal(jet) sizing since mine was built. My 99 air screw is set at 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 out from lightly seated. As far as the clicking in the rear end,you might check your rear brake pads.

Scott, I see you are becoming 4-wheeler poor as well. Burky00, check the rear chain adjustment for the clicking noise. I had a wheeler do that. it was driving me nuts and all I had to do was adjust the chain and lube it and it went away. hope that helps,Bubba

both highest likelyhood suggestions. if neither of those, check the carrier bearing by jacking up the quad on a floor jack (mounted to the carrier) and rock the tires in in alternate directions. Left front while right rear, and etc. Should be no, or darn near no, movement.

Thanks for the info guys. Not the chain, nor the brake pads. That carrier bearing sounds interesting though. What exactly is its purpose and where is it located. I also wonder if it could be a bad shock, or swingarm bushing??. I only have 50 hrs on this machine, and really have been easy on it. Mudden in Mich.

Its the silver thing between the swing arm that your axle runs through. It has 2 jam nut that need to be REAL tight. But what your click sounds like is a bad bearing inside the housing(had they same sound)try tightening it up and see if that helps pluss gease the sh out of it.

As he said. and could be the swing arm bearing too. Jack it up and start tugging and pulling on things. Quads take a heck of a pounding.

The clicking sound is because of a loose chain, or loose rear drive sprocket

One more suggestion for the clicking is to pull both rear hubs off grease the splines replace hubs. If the others didnt work try this, you have nothing to lose it takes about 10 minutes to do both sides. good luck

I know this sounds crazy,
but I had a rear clickin noise from my xplorer 400, and found out after a slug of inspections of bearings, bushings, chain...ect..ect.... that all it was is the chain guide out of adjuctment.
On my 95 it is the hard plastic sleeve that the rear chain glides through....there is a small adjustment, but after messing around with it,my clicking has now ceased.
Hope this might help.
