Why isn't there a pull rope start on 600 and 700
It surprises me that the 600 and 700 Sportsman don't have a back up pull rope for starting. What do you do in the field if the battery is dead and your by yourself? I guess start walking?

The battery on the 600/700 is over twice the size of anything out there. I have read a few posts about rincon owners who attempted to start their 650cc engines with the pull rope and if your not built like Arnlod, forget it. The Bombardier Quest 650 dos'nt have one either for the same reason. I carry a set of compact booster cables in the storage box under the seat just in case.

Just hope the starter never fails on the trail.

That's about as likely as the engine failing. I suppose you have a backup for that.

I do. I keep a spare on the front rack.

That 700 is a big engine to try and pull start. You'd probably end up breaking the handle off the rope or the rope itself.
Heck, why stop at carrying a spare engine. I just pull another Sportsman 700 behind me. |

They could have put a kick start on it, it couldn't be any harder to kick than my Harley. Even my old big red has a kick start.

I realy think Polaris blew it with that decision.
A modern utility quad with miles of wires, circuit boards and 100's of things that can go wrong with the electrical, up to its handle bars in a swamp 20 miles from camp, starter 2 feet under the water line, should have a pull start for a back up. Batteries go bad, starters go bad, grounds go bad, etc. etc. etc. In 20 pluss years in this sport I've needed a pull start/kick start on electric start machines plenty of times, and the new ones have 3 times the possible electrical problems. More then once I've been rideing at night and had the lights go dim, from a dead battery, the alternator kept the lights more or less working, when you shut off the quad guess what. I have an 02 sportsman 500 ho duse.
Last fall I was up on the Paiute trail in Utah. I was about 15 miles out of Richfield. It was cold and wet and I was having problems with my ignition switch returning to neutral. I think the spring froze. The result was that I ruined the starter. I shut off the quad on the top of a hill. ( just a lucky coincidence) to answer natures call and look around at the scenery. When I tried to start the quad, all I got was a high pitched whinning sound. I thought I was screwed. Since I was raised on manual transmission auto's I started the quad rolling downhill and put it in gear and it fired up and away I went. Straight back to Jorgensens, the Polaris dealer in Richfield, UT. When I mentioned how I started the quad, the tech said he didn't know that it was possible to do that. Well apparently it is. Just turn on the key, get it rolling and put it in hi gear |
