There are actually several different versions of the TRX200 models. There was one early model and then 4 other versions that came later on that are based on the same engine family and the chassis are nearly identical to.
The first version TRX200 was only made in 1984 like Hondamechanic was saying. It was basically a 4 wheeler version of the 200ES BigRed. (It also was Honda's first ever 4 wheeler,..which would explain the funky front end suspension setup that it came with). It was very long and had shaft drive. You activated reverse by a small lever on the side of the transmission.
In the spring of 1985, Honda released the TRX 200SX. This atv doesnt share any parts with the 1984 TRX200...engine or chassis. This one had alot better front suspension design. It was chain drive (as all TRX200 models were after 84) and the engine came from the FatCat200 motorcycle,..which was an autoclutch 5 speed version of the 86-87ATC200X 6 speed engine. The 200SX was only made in the 1986-1988 model years.
Then in 1989 they released the 1990 TRX200. Basically the 1988 200SX with different body work, fuel tank, and seat. It was known as the "turtle" because it had a huge hump over the rear fenders that was a storage compartment. The biggest difference of all however was that Honda removed 5th gear from this ATV. (This was the time where lawsuits from the three wheeler era were scaring some of the factories over injury liability). The "turtle" was only made in the 1990 and 1991 model year,...it was a very slow seller.
The last TRX200 was the TRX200D (aka TypeII). Essentially the same thing as the "turtle" 200 except that it had a rear rack instead of a cargo compartment. It was made from 1991 to 1997. The 1991 model still had the 4 speed from the "turtle" but gained back the 5 speed 200SX transmission for the 1992 model year until the end in 1997.
In 1997, Honda released the Recon 250 to replace the TRX200D. They were both sold along side each other in 1997 but the 200 didn't return for 1998.

back in the woods where she belongs
I sold my 1986 TRX 200SX for what I paid for it. I searched every web site I could find and found 2 used CDI boxes. I had it tuned, drove it for about 6 months then sold it last year.
Bought a 2000 Honda Fourtrax 300FW, rebuilt the rear drive and brakes with parts and service from Megaatv.com in LA. Cannot say enough about how much help Megaatv was in getting the service I needed to get this old ATV back on the trails.
