Cleaning up a rusty exhaust cover
I'm about to sell the ole '11 700 Griz and I'd like to clean up the metal exhaust cover that's toward the front of the machine. Its got a lot of surface rust so I'm figuring the best thing to do is just sand blast it? Any other ideas or thoughts on cleaning it up?

Sandblasting would be my #1, you could also use a wire brush on a drill, but that won't get out the deep pits (if any)...just make sure you treat with a rust remover/phosphate (Home Depot as an inexpensive product) after you're done to get every little bit or it'll just start right up again...I powder coat to metal prep is my thing...

There are a few other formulas of rust converters besides Corroseal that do basically the same thing. They convert rust into a different chemical compound. Some are good for high temperatures and some aren't. You can find some of them at most auto supply stores and just have to pick one that can handle exhaust heat. You can paint right over it with high temperature paint and there's no need to use any primer. Good luck.

I personally use Eastwood's Fast Etch...it removes rust and phosphates at the same time. I also used this Krud Kutter 8 oz. Rust Remover and Inhibitor-MR086 - The Home Depot from Home Depot...it works but not as fast/well as the Eastwood product...

A simple sand blast and a trip to a local auto parts store to get some high temp header paint will do this simple job. Most machine shops have a sand blaster as well as auto body shops, for a few bucks they should be able to give your cover a good blast, then get it home and a few good coats of extreme high temp paint should keep you going for another year or mabey two.
