Thinking of getting an RZR. Are there any years or models better than others?

Default Thinking of getting an RZR. Are there any years or models better than others?

I am contemplating getting a used RZR. As much as I would like to get a new RZR turbo, my budget is only $12,500. I would prefer spending more like $10,000 or less. I have seen quite a few used ones in this price range but don't know if they varied much year to year.

Im only looking for a 2 person RZR, and mostly trail ride with the occasional jumps.

The two biggest things I want within my budget are a good suspension, and power. I'm not sure if the 800cc ones really compare to the 900cc or 1000cc ones. Or if the suspension stayed the same all the years.

Anyone have any input on what years or models I should be looking for? Or ones to stay away from? Or common problems with them?

Can probably find a decent used 900 for the price range you mentioned. The newer 900 and 1000's have a taller suspension but can get a loaded 800 which has plenty of power. 08's had a bad airbox design flaw that was replaced by Polaris.

Keep up with maintenance and you shouldn't have any problems. My 09 was bulletproof and I rode the snot out of it.

Thanks for the info!

After looking now for a few days and doing some more research it seems like the older ones did have some issues with catching on fire. Looks like there were recalls.

Ill be honest, after feeling the insane power of the Can Am X3 turbo with 172 hp, anything less than that will be a disappointment. However my budget is less than half that of a new X3 so I'm gonna have to be okay with lowering it. I like the RZR platform a lot. It has qualities that I like over the Maverick, like seat position, and having the engine and other items more accessible to be worked on.

I have seen a few RZR 1000's in my price range and that's likely what I will aim for when the time is right.

Do you guys ever find yourself in the side by side not having enough room to go through the trails?

The 168 HP RZR XP Turbo looks like it would be a fun ride but it's 64" wide and the trails here are maintained at 50" wide. Some trails have gates to keep the wider vehicles out too. The 50" RZR 900 is only 2" wider than my quad and would fit down the trails, and it's 75 HP would be enough for me.

This is something I do need to look into, as the local trails maybe restrictive in size.

as far as the SXS goes, I would love to get a RZR 1000 turbo, however I have not seen any in my price range. I have seen a handful of 1000's, and plenty of 800's and 900's. But I don't think I'd be satisfied with less than at least 100hp. I think the 800's sir at about half that, and the 1000's seem to have a lot better suspension. So that's likely where I'll go.

however, if I find most of the trails I ride restrict to 50" or so, then my hands may be tied.

The 1000s has 100 hp and the smaller size and lighter weight over the XP 1000 I would think would make it feel plenty fast. But even used, they are hard to find in that price range. The Arctic Cat Wildcat 1000's seem to cost a bit less used around here. My local dealer has this for $8999 2013 Arctic Cat® Wildcat Limited 1000 Stock: 9DT302579T | ATVs and More. The Cat 1000 makes a little less power than the Polaris 1000, its basically about the same hp as the XP 900. For the money, its probably about the nicest 1000cc sport utv I've seen.

Thank so for the info greg!

I have not heard of the 1000s. I'll have to look into it. The 1000xt is 110hp, which I do like.

I have looked into the Wildcats. I agree for the money, they are a great value for what they offer. I could get one of those easily in my price range as I have seen several under 10k and honestly have seen quite a few even under 9k. But, the quality on them don't seem to be the same as the RZR. I have seen a few videos where they have bent suspension arms when taking just small jumps and taking some damage fairly easily just by going down some rough trails. I'm not ruling it completely out, but I would rather spend a little more on an RZR if I knew it would hold up better and still be within my price range.

On the 50" trail front I'll use the Paiute as an example. About 80% are open to every width quad or side by side. 20% are 50" trails and some are important connectors that are hard to go around. If you have these National Forestry Service limitations it might be tough to find a trail around the 50" ones.

Definitely want to check the trail regs in your area. A lot here in MN have no issues with width and only issue is gets tight in some of the wooded areas. My 50" was as wide, or wider, than an S model with all the mods I did and never had any issues where I rode.

If your riding area is more open and less mud/tight riding I can see you wanting the big HP. I wouldn't even think about riding a turbo machine around here in the woods, swamps, etc.

My 09 800 turned 30" black mambas like they weren't even there.

Id hold out for a 50" 900 - much improved engine compared to the 800. Im contemplating a 50" RZR next time.
