Default fan continuous running

I have a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 400. The other day when I shut the ATV off the fan kept running and the Hot Engine Light started flashing on the pod. I have disconnected the battery. Several days have passed and when the battery terminals are connected, the fan starts with the ATV off and the Hot Engine Light starts flashing. I unplugged the thermostat on the engine, but it does not help. I unplugged the fan, which made the fan stop, but the Hot Engine Light still flashes. All wiring looks good. Is the ECM bad or something else?

It was included in the recall for bad ECMs so there's a good chance it's bad.

Ecm is toast. 2004 Sportsman 400 wasn't on the list but should have been since the 2005 400 was.http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2008/...o-Fire-Hazard/ Part# has been updated to 2203348. This is the cheapest one I've found.127 bucks. Most other sites want $150.Polaris 2203348 KIT-SUREPOWER ECM 400\450\500

I saw a different site last night that said Polaris expanded the recall again and it included the 400. It wasn't this page but this shows a recall too. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2008/po...o-fire-hazard1

Yep you're right jumbofrank... My list was from Feb,yours was a later one from June that did indeed include the 2004 Sportsman 400. Glad that they did. Now if he happens to have the black Chinese module it can be replaced free. If it has the updated one already, then it's out of his pocket this time.

I bought the $150 one, and so far it has worked fine.
You will want to unhook your battery until you get the new ecm. Those little wires can't handle that voltage for long periods of time, and could possibly start on fire.
Even with the new ecm, I am still using my battery disconnect when I park it. Just don't trust it 100%.

Don't blame you one bit on that.. The Chinese ecms were the ones prone to catching fire, haven't heard of any US made modules doing that but like you I wouldn't trust them. Here's one that could have been worse that a member posted pics of. Plus I like your battery disconnect switch..

I don't think I ever heard of anyone using a battery disconnect on an ATV before, but have heard of them being used on cars and maybe boats too. It has the added benefit of being a theft deterrent if no one knows it's there. It's hard to hot-wire something when the battery isn't connected.

Thanks for the help. Polaris denied the ATV was included in the recall, even though I have had the ATV new and never had it recalled. I will order a new ECM and try it.

If a dealer told you that I'd print a copy of the recall and talk to another dealer. I wouldn't think that there would be a time limit on a safety recall either.. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2008/po...o-fire-hazard1
