I have a 1991 Yamaha big bear 350 4x4 that started to to not shift into high or low range after shifting into reverse. This is the shift lever on the left front fender. The foot shift works great once you can get it back into high or low range.

 

Check the brake "lock out" mechanism. This stops you from changing into reverse (and on some models out of reverse) unless you have the rear brake applied. The cable can stretch or break, or the mechanism under the gear lever jam.
