86 moto 4 80 wont start cold by electric.

my 86 moto4 80 will not electric start unless you push start and get the motor warm then it run and starts fine has new battery ,jets and pitcock

That is a sign of a weak stator. Could be valve lash too but that sounds backwards for that problem. grab your multimeter and ohm out the stator.

Not sure if the 86 models were two stroke or four, but Yamaha's four stroke 80 is notorious for the valve clearances closing up, giving exactly those symptoms.

ooops. Might be wrong so I deleted..
but ours was a 4 stroke. Gutless wonder but ran good.

Had a Breeze in this week with the same symptoms and no compression, sure enough, checked valve clearances yesterday and inlet valve was open all the time, gave it 0.003" clearance and it started on the button.
