Default 1989 Honda Fourtrax 300 dies with throttle

A friend of mine recently got a 89 fourtrax 300. It would crank up and idle good but it would break up at half throttle. He took apart the carb and cleaned it out along with the gas tank but still had the same issue. Since then he has rebuilt the carb, tried another carb, replaced the cdi box, coil, spark plug, and battery. Still won’t run right. Now it still idles good but dies with throttle. What is his problem??

Check compression for the overall health of the cylinder. If compression is good then look at other things

Is he sure he has the right CDI on. I think there were four different ones fitted to 300s and all, except the last, look identical except for the colour of wiring plugs and sockets. I had a 300 with this problem, checked, and found it had the wrong colour CDI for the year. Fitted the right one and the fault went away.

The one that didn’t work at all he said looked different than the original. It ran with the next one but not as well as the original. How can you tell if you got the right cdi?

"identical except for the colour of wiring plugs and sockets." If I remember rightly the plugs and sockets went from white to red to green then grey. Also, the writing on them, I think the 300 was coded HM and the parts went from HM0 to about HM7. This assumes genuine Honda, repro CDIs almost always have off white sockets, and their own part numbers, so you can only tell the right one by buying the right one for your year in the first place.
