Back when Honda first introduced its line of four-wheelers in the 80's, were they all considered Fourtrax or not? Also, were all Fourtrax fourwheelers 4-wheel drive? I'm asking because I have a $100 bet on these two topics. Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Colin

Don't know if this helps your bet or not. I have a 97 fourtrax 300 2x4.

They were called different things at different times.

The first Honda fourwheeler was in 1984. One model. The TRX200. It was not labeled a Fourtrax. It had the shaft driven engine that was also used in the ATC200ES Big Red.[Not to be confused with the ATC200E] It also only had one model year.[1984]

In 1985, Honda only had two models, the TRX125 [not labeled Fourtrax], and the TRX250[WAS labeled Fourtrax]. The TRX250 used basically the same chassis as the '84 TRX200 except the rear unit. The '85 TRX250 was the first fourwheeler labeled as Fourtrax.

Also, while the TRX125 didnt change for 1986, the name did. It was then called the TRX125 Fourtrax. 1986 was also the same year that Honda released the TRX70,TRXTRX200SX,TRX250R, and the TRX3504x4. All of which were dubbed "Fourtrax". The TRX3504x4 would become known as Fourtrax Foreman in 1988.

Hope I didnt jumble all that together and make it confusing for you.

I guess to sum it up briefly, The fourwheeler line wasn't always called "Fourtrax"....and "Fourtrax" doesn't neccisarily mean it has four wheel drive.

Knowsalot,

since you are up to speed on the '82 trx200, where the devil can I get a frame for one, my neighbor has a running/wrecked one, and not enough money to get a recent quad. I'm hoping to eventually hook him up with a frame that's not too expensive or far away. The last available I turned up was in detroit.

Are you referring to the '84 model TRX200?? They didn't make one in '82. You are going to have a hard time finding a frame for the '84 model. It was made only one year. The frame is very similar to the '85-'87TRX250, but will not work for use on the 200.

I'm afraid searching the salvage yards on the net is going to be your only choice. Don't forget to check with your local ATV salvage yards. A call to your local dealer should give you a few ideas of where to check locally for used parts.

Sorry for the lapse in visiting the forum ....
In the spring of 2001, I visited

Cycle Mart
73 Londonderry Turnpike
Hooksett NH 03106
603-625-5591.
No website known.

While I was there, I got a brake pedal for my 1984 TRX200 from them. They let me look around the yard (and into the storage trailers) and I found the correct brake lever by finding the TRX200s unique front suspension (trailing arm). Dealer said it was a TRX200 frame . He didn't know for certain where he had put the frame when I called him before I visited him, but he did know he had it *somewhere* (hey, he's got about 60 street bikes and few dozen ATVs in pieces in his yard; he should know where an obscure ATV frame is laying? No problem, I'll go look!). It is *probably* a TRX200 frame, but KNOWSALOT is the first person ever to imply that the front suspension might have been used for more than a 1984 TRX200 . Call them and see if they still have it. It was fully stripped when I visited: only the steering shaft was left, no wiring harnesses either, but I think the rear yoke was still on it.

Sorry to say, he likely won't dicker on the price... I paid $40 for a used foot brake lever (factory was twice that, I think). I asked him if he'd take $30, he said "No, but I'll take $50!". Yikes! Give him the $40 before he goes up in price!! I'd expect to pay him a couple hundred after shipping.

Ask yourself: is it *really* worth it? I don't think my TRX200 is worth that kind of effort: the only way I'll ever get parts for this rig is through the factory or through salvage yards. Too rare, too few in the yards, parts were scavenged long, long ago.
For example, here are a few items I'm *still* trying to locate, since last October...
Front wheels: Factory is $124 each and rising as of last fall. Douglas thinks they can custom drill some, but they aren't real positive about the year of my rig, so do they really have the right machine or not? I'm not spending my $$ on a guess. ITP says go to Douglas.
Front plastic? Factory is $176 last quote, no after market plastic available for the front: Maier says no, and the other plastic outfit only chuckled at me when I gave them my info. Maier says yes to the rear plastic, but their plastic loses the original toolbox.
Factory exhaust only, I think: FMF says "What year was that? Are you sure it is not SX?".
Uses unique rear axle bearings (the thin bearing thickness pattern is unique to japan bearing manufacturers only.. nothing in the USA matches it, and only 2 jap companies ever made them).
The list goes on.
Factory rear brakes were cheap, though, at $26.
I'd sell you mine, but I just put $1000 into the engine (oh dopey me), so I'm going to get some riding into it before it and I part company.

My local Honda dealer verbally calls my 1984 TRX200 a "Fourtrax", but it does not have a label on it saying "Fourtrax". My rigs plastic is heavily trashed, repainted, bondoed and wired... I got it in fall of 2000, very used. Honda dealer said it was introduced in late 1983, and he also said Honda stopped making them in early 1985 (the now legendary 1986 TRX200SX took over). My 1984 TRX200 is only rear wheel drive, and is shaft driven through a 5 speed hi/lo/reverse tranny.

rabnud, The '84 TRX200 has a frame similar to the '85-'87TRX250. The front portion is identical and the suspension parts will interchange, but everything behind the forward engine mount is different. The '84 TRX200 and the '85-'87 TRX250 also have the same plastic.

The '84 TRX200 and the '84 ATC200ES Big Red have the same engine. This engine was only made for these two models and was only made for that one year.

To help you identify a frame from a 200 to a 250, unless you know by looking at one, use these numbers to help you.

'84 TRX200.......SER# starts with JH3TE07

'85-'87 TRX250...SER# starts with JH3TE06

Also, if the handlebar controls are still there, the TRX200 had it's reverse lever on the engine[also engaged Hi/Lo]

The 250 engages reverse like all other late model Honda's. [Rev. button on the rear hand brake lever.]

Thanks for the help knowsalot.
Your knowledge hints you've been at a dealership for a while.

Do you have any ideas that may help my battle-scarred rig?
I'll post a new thread as 84 TRX200, I'd appreciate your input.

Regarding the reverse lever on the handlebars:
The Cycle Mart place is about 40 miles away from my house, and my visit was in spring of 2001.... I simply do not recall what was on the handlebars. I'm not anywhere near there more than twice a year (by accident or on any other purpose); so I'm not able to pop in and ask about the frame.

Sorry, but Elrancho will have to call Cycle Mart themself.
