It all depends on what you feel comfortable with. Every machine is different when it comes to handling, comfort and so on. Also you mentioned you have never ridden before and the raptor has a clutch so if I were you I would look for something with an automatic clutch or a totally automatic transmission unless you are familiar with using a clutch. I started out riding my uncles magnum 325 and it fit me pretty well and I was only like 5'6'' when I started riding.

Good Luck on picking your machine

or a trailboss/trailblazer for the auto (learn how to handle the bike 1st, then learn how to shift later) Like Omalley said.
Polaris makes some pretty fun/safe/forgiving machines.

well i dont think a clutch eould be a problem. it isn't that hard to learn how to use them

Hi guys I am the kids father who posted the questions because I think the kids first bike should be something smaller this raptor is a 650. I remmember when i was 13 a 250 bnike seemed HUGE. A 650?? com on- first time ever riding a quad. I was thinking of letting hime rent one for a week or two- Does anyone know of a place to rent one in MA. or Southern NH? Any help and advise would be very helpfull. All he talks abouts is buying my friends Raptor 650 ( which is cheap compared to a new one) ( but i dont want to spend all the money I saved in hospital bills) He has never ridden any quad or motor bike before- Iam with the quy that said learn the machine first than the clucth. thanks Have a safe and happy new year.

this is exactly why i recommend a 300ex or warrior (better yet, a cheap used one). They are cheap, reliable, low maintinence machines that will generally hold their value (if you shop smart).
let the kid learn (abuse) a bike like this, and if he proves to enjoy the sport,,,upgrade from there.

When I was a kid, the warrior was a big bike. Buying a 650-660 for any kids 1st bike, is like buying him a casket.
You have the right (responsible) idea. Also be sure to factor the price of safety gear (good used stuff on ebay)(while still growing).

ohhh

also factor in the price of Dad's quad.

Riding alone is unsafe.
