Default 400EX, Sproket & Tyre Choice

Please help!! I at currently running a 22 inch tyre on the rear of my EX and the standard sprokets 15/38. I know that the standard size tyre is a 20 inch, I have noticed that my EX doens't have a lot of low down torque, I would assume this is due to running the larger rear tyres. I unfortunitely bought the bike with these tyres on, they are the Kenda (Bear Claws), therefore don't have any idea on what kind of power and torque I should be expecting from this bike. Do I go down to a 14 tooth sproket in the front and will the bike then feel the same as if I were using a 20 inch tyre on the rear, I don't know!!!

I would like to know what sprokets setup I should use if I continue running this tyre on the rear, and what the alternative is when I replace these tyres in terms of sprokets and tyres? I do mainly trail riding and the odd enduro race in the future. I will be away for the next couple of days so I'm looking forward to getting some good responses.

SADude, signing off until later.

Thanks

If you are going to run a 22" tire, you need to go down one tooth on the front sprocket. A 14 will get you back to the stock gearing. You'll definetly get more bottom end and torque with the lower gearing.

that sounds like a good choice might want a litter largwer on the back also bigger foot print on the tire use the gearing to work the extra traction.

I ran ITP Holeshot 22" XCT's at one time. I tried the 14 tooth thing for a while, and it was WAY TO MUCH, even with the bigger tires. The front end was coming off the ground at all the wrong times, especially when powering out of turns. The bike was fun to "play" on, but out on the trail in the real world, it just wasn't at all practical. My solution was to go 1 tooth bigger in the rear (1 tooth in front=3 teeth in back), which worked well and was still controlable. It still fit the swingarm skid, and stock chain length.
